Joana Teixeira was sweet enough to write another guest post for us today! For better or for worse, I actually highlight my hair at home (are you gasping? lol). I was inspired by hair legend Jessie James Decker and talked about it in my Jessie James Decker Ombre Blonde Highlights at Home. Highlights = bleach though, which = damage so I asked Joana to help us with the after care to mitigate that damage and here’s what she said (with my comments in italics):
It’s an exciting step to bleach your hair, but keeping it looking (and feeling) great afterwards takes a little work. Bleaching your hair is something that needs careful thought, expert application and a solid aftercare plan. From maintaining color, shine and moisture to lessening the risk of damage, these top 10 tips will help you look after your bleached locks.
- Wash your hair less frequently
Bleaching strips your hair of its natural oils and has a drying effect, so the last thing your hair needs afterwards is a lot of shampooing. That’ll just add to the dryness. Wash every three to four days and use a dry shampoo in between if need be. I’ve been using the Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and my favorite dry shampoo is Batiste. If I’ve worked out and need to shampoo more than every few days I use my Drybar Double Standard cleansing and conditioning foam which I wrote about in this post. If you need updo ideas this How To Get a Messy Ponytail post is such an OG Blushing in Hollywood post, but honestly one of my favorites of all time!!
- Increase the conditioning
Your hair will be more brittle, so leaving conditioner in after showering can help, especially when it comes to combing and maintaining shine. This is a top tip if you want to know how to get shiny hair and keep it that way after bleaching your locks. My ride or die leave-in product is It’s a 10! Miracle Leave-In Product.
- Time for a change of towel
Microfiber towels are gentle on your hair and ideal after bleaching. They’re super absorbent and help dry the hair without making it frizzy. I’ve been using the Aquis Hair Towel ever since I learned about this tip!
- Pat don’t rub
It’s not just the towel you’re using but the way you’re using it that counts. Pat your hair dry rather than rubbing. It’s a gentler way of doing things and will certainly lessen the risk of damage.
- Avoid excessive heat
Straighteners, tongs and hair dryers can cause hair to dry out, and when it’s bleached that can lead to damage. Too much heat can dull the color and shine too. Speaking of shine, if you want to know how to get shiny hair step by step just follow that guide.
- Have regular trims
Bleached hair is more susceptible to split ends so regular trims will help keep it healthy. I get my hair cut by the lovely Emma Parkes at Goodform Salon in West Hollywood. She’s an absolute magician at color too.
- Weekly deep condition
Using a deep conditioning treatment or hair mask once every week or two weeks will help your hair maintain moisture.
- Use hair oil
A quality hair oil is vital when it comes to looking after your new look. They can be pricey but you only need a few drops to keep your hair healthy so it’s well worth the investment. My fave is Drybar 100 Proof Treatment Oil.
- Protect from UV rays
Just like heat styling products, UV rays from the sun can cause damage. When you’re out and about make sure your hair is shaded and look for hair care products that contain sun-blocking properties. I love a good baseball hat to protect my hair and skin from the sun!
- Touch up roots
Your chosen color will start to change over time due to heat that’s emitted from the scalp, and the hair that’s closest to the scalp will dull quickest. Therefore it’s a good plan to touch up your roots regularly, but there’s no need to re-bleach everything as that could cause more damage.
So there you have it, 10 ways to look after your hair after bleaching. We’ve looked at how best to wash your hair, how to care for it and how to get shiny hair. Follow these tips and you’ll love your new color for longer.

Good morning everyone! Just in case anyone has money left over after Black Friday, I wanted to give a shout out to some of my favorite small businesses for Small Business Saturday! Most of these are run by ladies who are also my friends! I see how hard they work and I am just so proud of them, so I have to support them however I can!
One of my best friends Annabelle (she was actually the one that got me to move to LA!) has a podcast and online store called Adderall and Compliments. At the shop Annabelle sells crystal kits for people new to crystals, healing kits, and manifestation kits, as well as crystal towers, kick ass kitten keychains, and kitten necklaces (her listeners are called kittens!) She runs this entire business out of her apartment from the ordering and inventory to the packaging and shipping and she has worked her butt off this year! Be sure to check her out especially since her whole site is on sale until Monday! Here’s a picture of me wearing one of the crystal dagger necklaces: Continue reading Small Business Saturday 2017

As much as we’d all love to sit around each morning drinking fresh coffee, eating avocado toast and endlessly styling our hair, most of the time that just isn’t possible. While it may be difficult to ensure your hair looks alright in these circumstances, there are ways to guarantee yourself a good hair day despite the rush. A few weekends ago I traveled to Chicago with my friends Annebelle and Meagan for the live show of their podcast Adderall & Compliments. I have been helping the girls in any way I can for the past few months after I saw what an incredible impact they have had on their community of listeners (referred to as “kittens”) all over the world. Annabelle and Meagan have shared on the podcast about their mental health ups and downs and the response has been incredible. Kittens at every show come up to the girls with tears in their eyes saying they have changed their lives and they are forever grateful. They feel so much less alone and like someone finally understands them and what they’re going through and that is just priceless. People have said they were contemplating suicide and the podcast got them through their low point and now they have finally reached out and gotten help- it’s amazing. I think the work they are doing is SO important so I am doing whatever I can to support them in their mission- hence why I have been traveling with them for their live shows!
Here’s the flier I made for the show which includes Meagan’s caricature from NYC: Continue reading Chicago Trip – A&C Live Show, Shopping, Eataly, and more!
Today we have a special guest post by Joana Teixeira. I asked her for help on getting Jessie James Decker’s beautiful loose beach waves i.e.:
and she was nice enough to write up the following tutorial! Enjoy!!
Heading into the autumn months it can feel like all the possibilities of summer are slowly seeping away. Those long, sunlit evenings, days by the beach and summer holidays abroad… When we think about the dark, gloomy weather that is about to come our way it can all feel a little bit depressing.
But it really doesn’t need to! There are lots of ways to maintain the spirit of summer even in those dark, wintery months. Why not pay homage to the god of all things beachy and sunny by re-creating summer hairstyles this fall? Get yourself some sun kissed locks and a casual sea-salt look. To keep the essence of summer alive why not try out a beautiful beach waves style? This classic occurs naturally after you’ve been in the sea, but it’s also recreate-able from the comfort of your own living room even in the depths of Fall.
To help you get this look here’s my own handy guide. I’ve got everything covered whether you want to know how to curl short hair or long hair, whether to use curling tongs or just a simple overnight twist. Continue reading How to Get the Look: Beach Waves
Tinsley Mortimer is the newest blonde on the Real Housewives of New York City. The socialite and NYC staple must have some kind of Benjamin Button disease because despite being born 8/11/75 (she’s about to be 42!) she somehow still looks like she’s in her 20s. Tinsley has a classic, clean, chic, preppy style and is definitely not into change. One reason the Tinsley Mortimer always looks on point- she used to be a beauty editor at Vogue (source)!
“My Southern mother taught me to never be ashamed to wear a full face of makeup at all times. She started putting lip gloss on me in fourth grade. So it’s just sort of built in.” (source)
