How to Fill in Your Brows

I recently went to the Sephora Perfect Brows event and they showed me how to use a bunch of different Anastasia Beverly Hills products to get my perfect brows.

Here's me with a very full face of makeup before brows (on the left) and after brows on the right.

After I went to the NYX Face Awards recently I knew I wanted to attend more beauty events ASAP. I hit the internet and found a few. If you want to attend beauty events you can find them on websites for departments stores such as Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, Sephora, and MAC. The events are typically free and sometimes there’s champagne or gifts which is always fun!

Sephora Perfect Brows Event

This past Saturday I went to Sephora for their Perfect Brows Event. The event was nationwide and Sephora had product specialists/makeup artists from the famous Anastasia Beverly Hills in store to show people how to fill in their brows.

I was happy when I saw this because I already use Anastasia products to fill in my brows (I use the Brow Wiz daily and recently got the Dipbrow Pomade) and I needed a little help as to how to use the pomade.

I posted this photo on Instagram and Facebook and what you might not have noticed was that my brows were each done a different way:

Where to Start Your Eyebrows

The first thing I was concerned about when I walked in Sephora was if my brows were the correct shape. My brows are sisters not twins and I’m always unsure where to make them stop in the middle. The tip is to hold a makeup brush straight up and down on the side of your nose and that is where you want to stop:

Pretend these black arrows are me holding a makeup brush up along side of my nose and this is where your eyebrow should stop in the middle.

Eyebrow Arch

I then asked if my arches were ok because I used to get my eyebrows waxed, but now I just pluck them occasionally because I like to keep them pretty natural so they will be lower maintenance.

Where to Arch Your Eyebrows

To find out where your arch should be she told me to put the makeup brush against my nose again, but this time angle it so that it’s pointing towards the outer edge of your iris (the colored part of your eye). Here’s what that looks like:

These arrows are pointing to where the arch in your eyebrow (the highest point) should go. On the left I moved the arrow down so you can see what part of my eye I'm lining it up with and if you continued that line that is where my arch would go.

Anastasia Beverly Hills DIPBROW Pomade

Next up I asked her to show me how to use the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade. I told her I have the Taupe and she told me she thought I needed something a bit warmer like the blonde, but I think she ultimately agreed to try the Taupe on me.

She did this slightly more intense or night-time on my left eyebrow. Here is where she drew the lines with the Dip Brow ($18) pomade using a small angled brush and then she blended up and down to fill in my brow:

The dark lines show where she applied the dip brow which she then blended into the middle of the brow. She used whatever was left on the brush to feather in the hairs closest to my nose by making small strokes upwards.

You can see here she basically drew a line on the bottom and the top of the brow and then blended it into the middle to fill it out.

Definitely start with a very very small amount of product because a little goes a long way and you can always add more.

She then used the same brush without adding more product to put in some small vertical, slightly angled away from my nose strokes (to make them look like hairs) closer to my nose. I love when makeup artists say this is to make the brow look more natural because oh yes all of our hair naturally grows straight up against gravity.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel

After that she applied the Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel ($22) in Caramel to warm it up a bit and fill the brow out:

She told me that the tinted brow gel has a little bit of sparkle to add dimension to the brow, make it look more natural, and make it look more like hair. I liked this brow gel a lot. I have the clear ABH brow gel and I don’t like how it dries and makes my eyebrows itchy and then I rub them off! It defeats the purpose.

I then asked her if she could go around the brow with concealer to carve it out like how Lilly Ghalichi does her makeup and she used this concealer- the Anastasia Beverly Hills Pro Pencil ($18) which I really loved and I’ll probably cave and buy it eventually [update: it took 4 years, but I did end up buying this!]:

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Primer

Next up she showed me how to do a daytime/softer look and I told her I wanted a more ombre looking eyebrow. She first used the Brow Primer Pencil (which looks exactly like the one above except the product is clear and it’s $21).

Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil

4/24/19 update: I’ve been using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil ever since this event – almost 5 years! Love this thing!!

Then she used the new Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil in Taupe ($23) to fill in my brow very lightly on the part near my nose and darker on the outer part to give it that ombre effect. When she was filling it in she used small, short strokes to mimic what the brow hairs look like.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil vs. Brow Wiz

She told me she preferred the Perfect Brow Pencil because it lasts much longer than the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz which I think is an excellent point especially because these pencils are not cheap.

The Perfect Brow Pencil has a spooly on the opposite side so you can brush the hairs up and out in order to blend the product. She then topped this brow with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel in Caramel as well and voila, brows on! Here’s what the Perfect Brow Pencil looks like:

Voila here's my eyebrows all filled in!
