Summer Makeup Routine for Oily and Combination Skin

Hello everyone! Summer is here and that can be rough for us with combination and oily skin so I thought I’d share the products I’ve been using to try to prevent my face from melting off. This is a very full face of makeup, but “natural” enough to wear to work.

My Summer Makeup Routine

Primer for Oily Skin

Apply moisturizer, SPF, and primer. I’ve been trying different combinations of these 3 and haven’t yet found my perfect prep and prime products yet. I will say I was very disappointed with Becca’s Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector which is also super expensive so I definitely would not recommend that. The next one I will be purchasing and trying soon is the Giorgio Armani Maestro UV Skin Defense Primer SPF 50 ($64, but hey, cheaper than Botox!).

Foundation for Oily Skin

Apply foundation and concealer. Lately I’ve been using Marc Jacobs re(marcable) Full Cover Foundation in 12 Ivory ($55)

mixed with MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC20 ($27) in order to get my perfect shade. These are both super full coverage so I’ve been skipping concealer recently.

Powder Foundation for Oily Skin

Apply powder foundation all over face to set the liquid/cream foundation and concealer. Lately I’ve re-discovered an old fave, my Rimmel Stay Matte Long Lasting Pressed Powder in 020 Nude Beige.

 

I apply the Rimmel powder with the Real Techniques Powder Brush ($8).

Apply eye makeup to give the face a few minutes to “dry”. I use a Sigma E40 Tapered Blending eyeshadow brush to apply whatever bronzer I’m using that day to my crease.

Lately I’ve been loving Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer ($32).

Then I apply Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Color in Moonlight ($29) all over my lid

and blend it into the crease with a Morphe M433 Pro Firm Blending Fluff eyeshadow brush ($6).

I made a whole post about how much I love the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Color and I really think that eyeshadow sticks are perfect for summer- they’re quick and easy, don’t crease, and stay put all day. I’ve also been loving my Gosh Cosmetics Forever Eye Shadow in Light Copper which I got on my trip to Toronto which I don’t think you can find in the US. I then apply mascara and I’m currently using Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express in Black ($5).

For brows I’m using Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil in Taupe ($23).

Then I apply a healthy amount of bronzer (currently Benefit’s Hoola, see above) all over my face followed by blush which is typically Milani Luminoso ($8).

And finally, it’s time for finishing powder! I’ve been so obsessed with buying things on Amazon Prime lately (Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial).

Setting Powder for Oily Skin

I stumbled upon this Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder ($7) which was cheap and had great reviews so I figured, why not try it?

This powder has been great! I really notice my face getting much less oily throughout the day when I use it. This is a loose powder and it has a sifter and a powder puff inside. I pour a small amount in the lid and use a fluffy face brush to pat (not swipe) this powder onto my T-Zone. This powder will make your face more matte immediately, diminish the appearance of pores, and reduce (but not completely eliminate) the amount of oil on your face at the end of the day. Finishing powder goes on at the very end to set everything in place to make it last as long as possible. This powder also has no paragons, no artificial pigment, no animal ingredients, no mineral oil, and no artificial fragrances. The powder looks white, but it is translucent and does not leave a white cast on your face. You can also wear just this powder (over SPF which you should be wearing daily) even if you’re not wearing makeup to help control your oil throughout the day.

All the beauty gurus have really been hyping the Laura Mercier Loose Translucent Powder which I bought and tried, but I don’t think it’s anything special. Plus it’s super expensive ($38 for 1 oz.) for how little product you get! Kelly Dodd from Real Housewives of Orange County is a fan.

Setting Spray for Oily Skin

I finish off my face with a few pumps of NYX Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray ($8)

I then put on Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 in Grapefruit & Ginger ($8) to protect my lips on my commute to work (because I Didn’t Think I Would Get Skin Cancer Either).

When I get to work I’ve been applying LORAC Alter Ego Lip Gloss in Supermodel ($16). I’m usually not a lip gloss girl, but I love this pinky peach one.
