Denise Richards’ hairstylist Carlos Ortiz was sweet enough to share some of the products and techniques he uses to get Denise’s sexy hair styles. I was honestly so surprised and delighted by these tips. I LOVE a beauty tip which means I’ve heard a LOT of them so it’s hard to surprise me with something new- but he did!! Be sure to follow Carlos on Instagram to see more of his amazing work @carlitos_hair.

Prepping the Hair with Salt Water Spray
Carlos says he always starts off Denise’s hair with a base of salt water. This gives it some organic waves for her wavy haired looks. Denise gives off such beachy Malibu vibes it makes sense that she likes that natural sea salt wave look.
DIY Salt Water Spray for Hair
He makes the salt water spray himself by mixing distilled water, sea salt, tea tree oil and lavender oil and shaking it together in a glass spray bottle.
Tea Tree Oil can help with hair growth, a dry or itchy scalp, dandruff, and oily hair. It’s very strong so only use a few drops in the Sea Salt Spray.
Lavender Oil also is antimicrobial and helps with a dry itchy scalp, inflammation, hair growth, and it has a lovely and calming scent.
Adding Moisture and Shine Back In With La Mer Moisturizer
This tip shook me. After the salt water spray base Carlos takes some La Mer Moisturizer and emulsifies it into the hair to glaze over it. To emulsify the product you would warm it up in our hands so it becomes more like an oil consistency then apply it to the hair. CHIC!
Air Dry + Evian Bottle Water Spray
He then lets the hair dry naturally and sprays it with Evian Bottled Water spray. He likes to use a nice water in her hair and it helps to reactivate the natural curl.
When I wear my hair natural and wavy I actually do a similar routine. I wash my hair at night then twist it into a top knot and secure it with a scrunchi. In the morning I reactivate some of my curls and add product to add shine, definition, hold, and volume and then I’m good to go! This stretches out my curls into waves which I find more manageable.
Hair Dryer
Carlos uses Solano Hair Driers on Denise Richards. The Solano is an Italian made hair dryer. It emits far infrared heat to help dry the hair quickly. It has 1875 watts and a 2 year warranty as well as great reviews.
Curling Iron
He uses the T3 curling irons in her hair at 175 degrees.
He says it’s not necessary to have the irons at full heat mode. This was SUCH a good reminder for me to turn down the heat on my own hot tools!! He said low heat not high heat ever!
Cool the Hair in Braids
He says the most important part of wavy/natural hair styling is to let the hair cool off in braids. This will help the waves last longer.
Hair Products
Hair Powder
Carlos says he always finishes off with dry powders in the hair using Design.Me Puff Me Volumizing Cloud Mist.
Hair powder adds versatile control for messy texture or intense volume. This product is also sulfate, paraben, and cruelty-free.
Hairspray
For hairspray Carlos likes Fatboy hairsprays.
Hair Brush
Carlos only uses boar bristle hair brushes. He says they help to keep the hair healthy. The bristles distribute the natural oils in the hair while exfoliating the scalp and stimulating circulation of hair follicles. I have a classic Mason Pearson boar bristle hair brush and I love it. These were made over 100 years ago and are still sold today. They are great quality and will last a long time.
Hair Pins
Carlos prefers Goody Hair Bobby pins because they don’t snag the hair. I like how he uses a little craft organizer box to keep them sorted. I think I need one of these!
