I’ve loved the reality TV show Southern Charm on Bravo from the very first season and Whitney Sudler-Smith’s mother Patricia Altschul was such breakout star right from the very first episode! If you don’t have Bravo you can watch the latest seasons of the TV show Southern Charm on Amazon Prime. I read Patricia’s book The Art of Southern Charm to find out how exactly she stays looking so gorgeous. Patricia Altschul was born on April 16, 1941 so she is currently 76 years young and looks incredible! Keep reading to find out how she stays that way!
Patricia Altschul’s Makeup
Patricia believes women should put some makeup on before leaving the house, but she thinks a light touch is best. She says that women should look demure but pretty and fresh. (Source)
In her book Patricia says that as a child the only product she was allowed to use was a lipstick called Tangee Lipstick which looks orange in the tube, but changes to pink on the lips.
These days for lip treatment she uses one of my favorites the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment which has SPF 15. If you’ve never tried this lip balm/moisturizer I highly recommend it! (Source)
These days she loves a soft pink lipstick like MAC’s Mineralize Rich Lipstick in Be Fabulous with a touch of lipgloss. Sadly this lipstick was limited edition and is no longer available, but a similar color would be MAC’s Snob lipstick. I would guess that she pairs it with something luxe like Erika Jayne’s favorite Dior ‘Addict’ Ultra-Gloss or Lisa Vanderpump’s favorite Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss Moisturizing Glossimer.
According to her Twitter, on the show Patricia wears Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte #7 Lingerie Pink. Doesn’t this beautiful packaging just scream Patricia?
For foundation Patricia Altschul says in her book that she likes Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation.
When she is getting her makeup done professionally, her go-to is the Makeup For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation because it gives a flawless finish, has excellent coverage, lasts all day, looks great on and off camera, and doesn’t feel heavy on the skin.
The blush Patricia likes is Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Cheek to Chic’ Swish & Pop Blush. I’m guessing she likes the colors “Love Glow” or “Love is The Drug.”
Her favorite beauty technique is curling her eyelashes. I’m guessing Patricia would use something classic, a cult fave like the Shiseido ‘The Makeup’ Eyelash Curler.
Brows are important for Patricia as they frame the face and should be shaped properly. She also recommends tinting the brows if they are going grey. For the brows Patricia trusts Anastasia Beverly Hills products like one of my favorites the Anastasia Beverly Hills ‘Perfect’ Brow Pencil.
Another tool Patricia can’t live without is one of my faves, the beautyblender. Beauty blenders can be used to apply liquid and cream foundations, concealers, highlighters, contour creams, etc and blur out the edges leaving a beautiful, airbrushed finish. I can’t live without mine either!
Patricia keeps her makeup and beauty supplies on her famous dressing table which is positioned so that she has good, natural light. This is a good tip for making sure your makeup looks just as good when you go outside of your house.
She keeps her brushes in a mint julep cup.
She also avoids touching her face with her fingers so she doesn’t spread germs. She uses pads, cotton balls, brushes, and Q-tips instead.
Fun fact: Patricia Altschul’s friend and business partner in her caftan line Georgette Mosbacher was actually previously the CEO of upscale skin care and beauty lines La Prairie and Borghese! (Source) I’m super curious to read Georgette Mosbacher’s book that Patricia Mentioned on Southern Charm- It Takes Money Honey!
Patricia Altschul’s Makeup Artist
For the show, Patricia Altschul uses Karen Thornton as her makeup artist. You can contact her through her business website CoverGirl Brides.
Patricia Altschul’s Dermatologist
Patricia Altschul uses a skin care routine prescribed by her team of dermatologists– Dr. Marguerite Germain in Charleston, Dr. Dennis Gross in NY, and Dr. Harold Lancer in LA. She recommends seeing one so they can analyze your skin type and recommend the right products for you.
Patricia Altschul’s Skin Care – Sunscreen
What’s the golden rule for aspiring Southern belles according to Patricia’s Altschul’s book? Staying out of the sun! Her rule is to wear sunblock at all times to defend against wrinkles, freckles, and skin cancer (which I’ve already had and posted about). She credits her avoidance of the sun as the main reason why she stays looking so young. Patricia says she always protects her face and hands with SPF. She swims for exercise, but waits until the end of the day when the sun is not as harsh.
One of Patricia’s dermatologists makes Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen which is hydrating and anti-aging. It also has vitamins C and E which help protect against aging and make sunscreen even more powerful. Dr. Dennis’ skin care line is also cruelty free which is great for an animal lover like Patricia!
Patricia’s dermatologist Dr. Lancer makes LANCER Skincare Sheer Fluid Sun Shield SPF 30 which is broad spectrum, has a smooth, non-greasy finish, and contains both physical and chemical sun protection.
According to her book, Patricia starts her night time skin care routine by taking off all of her makeup with Neutrogena Make Up Remover Facial Wipes. Patricia leaves wipes in her guest room in order to prevent visitors from ruining her expensive pillow cases. My favorite tip from her book The Art of Southern Charm was when setting up a guest room to leave a card printed with the house wifi information, in 2017 who wouldn’t love that!?
After removing her makeup Patricia uses a gentle face cleanser, maybe one like her dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross’ All-in-One Facial Cleanser with Toner which cleanses, tones, and removes makeup.
Patricia Altschul’s dermatologist Dr. Lancer also has Lancer The Method Cleanse Cleanser which is a gentle, lightly foaming cleanser which is enriched with hydrators and skin smoothing agents.
A few times a week she uses a gentle exfoliant. Her dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross makes Alpha Beta Ultra Gentle Daily Peel pads which help with uneven skin tone and texture, fine line and wrinkles and enlarged pores without irritating sensitive skin.
Dr. Lancer has a best-selling skin resurfacing treatment called Lancer Skincare The Method – Polish Exfoliator.
After that Patricia moisturizes. She keeps this same routine daily and says the more regularly you do something to easier it is to remember to do it. Patricia’s dermatologist has a moisturizer the Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Ferulic + Retinol Anti-Aging Moisturizer which uses ferulic acid which is an antioxidant and retinol which exfoliates and promotes cell turnover to restore elasticity, provide hydration, and restore the skin’s natural ability to regenerate itself. It also can enhance makeup application.
In her book Patricia says she has recently started doing cryofacials at the dermatologist where liquid nitrogen vapors are applied to the face and neck to stimulate collagen and decrease wrinkles. She brought Southern Charm cast member Landon Clements recently to help with her sun damage.
Patricia Altschul’s Bath and Beauty Sleep Routine
Patricia takes a relaxing bath before bedtime. She lights candles, fills the tub up with water that’s not too hot as to not dry out the skin, and adds a generous amount of This Works Deep Sleep Bath Oil.
After the bath Patricia uses Epicuren Discovery Orange Blossom After Bath Moisturizer.
Patricia says in her book that she uses a Branché Beauty Silk Charmeuse Pillowcase because they prevent wrinkles, preserve your hairstyle and feel wonderful.
4. A good night’s sleep makes Patricia look and feel younger so she sometimes uses an eye mask like the Branché Beauty Belle De Nuit Silk Eye Mask in addition to her blackout curtains and sleep routine to help her get a good night’s rest.
Patricia Altschul’s Plastic Surgery
Patricia is all for any “enhancements” to help turn back the clock, as long as they are more subtle improvements.
Patricia Altschul’s Hair
Patricia quotes Truman Capote who says that if you maintain the same hairstyle over the years, you’ll never age. She also believes you should keep close to your natural hair color if you’re going to dye your hair to cover grey as well. (Source)
For her signature hair style, it looks to me like she does a sleek blow-out with a round brush, rolling at the ends so that it curls under and then sets it with hot rollers especially in the front to give the hair a lot of volume and body. This is similar to Lisa Vanderpump’s hair.
I have and recommend the Caruso Molecular Steam Hairsetter (~$32). Separate the front section of the hair into a mohawk. Start with a 2″ section closest to the forehead. Use a jumbo roller and start with the roller halfway down. Roll the hot roller down to the ends very neatly, then LOOSELY roll under, back, and away from the forehead and pin until the hair is cool and set.
Patricia says women should have clean, shiny, and pretty hair that’s done and combed. (Source)
She recommends being cautious about adding too many highlights to prevent hair from getting dry and brittle.
Patricia Altschul’s Hair Salon
It seems that Patricia has gone to Lisa Vanderpump’s favorite hair salon in Beverly Hills, Batia & Aleeza which does makes sense since their hair is a little bit similar.
Patricia Altschul’s Nails
Whenever I see Patricia’s nails on the show and in photos they’re typically a much darker color and appear short, natural, and well manicured. I would guess she uses something like Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in Black Cherry.
Patricia Altschul’s Fragrance
For perfume Patricia loves the Guerlain Muguet Eau de Toilette not only for the beautiful bottle, but also for the delicate lily-of-the-valley floral notes. (Source) This perfume is $480 so if you don’t quite have that to spend on a perfume, another Lily of the Valley scented perfume is:
Miu Miu Eau de Parfum ($128 for this whole set) and I feel like Miu Miu would still be Patricia approved.
Patricia Altschul’s Fashion
Patricia is of course the Queen of the Caftan which is why she started her own line- Patricia’s Couture by Sherina.
Patricia Altschul’s Smile Tip
Patricia thinks if you’re going to make an investment in your appearance, that your smile is the best place “If you are making an investment in your appearance, put your money where your mouth is. Clean, white teeth will always make you look pretty and young. It is so important to take care of your teeth. Explore straightening, bonding, whitening . . . anything you can do for a better smile.” (Source) I totally agree that even using a good old fashioned Crest White Strip can make you quickly and easily look younger and prettier.
